The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization Within The American Legion. The S.A.L. is made up of males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United Stayes military thus becoming eligible for membership in The American Legion.

 

Together, members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary ans the Sons of The American Legion make up what is known as The Legion Family. All three organizatios place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation's children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship. Sons have always assisted Legionnaires with Legion Family Programs.

 

As of December31, 2010, the Sons of The American Legion Detachment of Maryland was the 6th largestDetachment in the Country with 15,460 members comprising 127 Squadrons. With there being 150 American Legion Posts in the Department of Maryland, our Detachment can boast of having Squadrons in 84.66% of these posts.

 

The Detachment of Maryland is also very proud of the fact that throughout the years, we have provided the National Organization with 5 National Commanders.

 

Our Detachment continues to represent The American Legion and the Sons of The American legion in a professional manner and has been recognized nationally for our support of Children & Youth, Americanism, and Veterans Affairs programs.

 

For administrative year 2010-2011, the Detachment of Maryland had volunteer hours totaling 117,776 and donated more than $535,446 to programs such as the Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans Affairs and Hospitals, Heroes to Hometown, Fisher House, Casey Care Foundation, Children's Miracle Network, Special Olympics, National Emergency Fund, Toys for Tots, American Legion Racing, American Legion Baseball, Boys State, National Oratorical Contest, Scouting, Flag Etiquette, Flag Replacement and numerous other programs.

 

The Detachment of Maryland will continue to support the programs that benefit our veterans, our active duty military and the children of our country.

Proud possessors of a priceless heritage, we male descendants of veterans of the Great Wars, associate ourselves together as Sons of The American Legion for the following purposes:

 

To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a true spirit of Americanism; to preserve the memories of our former members and the association of our members and our Forefathers in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state, and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goowill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principals of justice, freedom, and democracy; to consecrate and santify our friendship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness; to adopt in letter and spirit all of the great principals for which The American Legion stands; and to assist in carring on FOR GOD AND COUNTRY.
